Bed & breakfast in Alcalá la Real

Welcome to La Casa del Patio Grande

La Casa del Patio Grande has undergone many transformations over its history, the most recent in 2026. Lived in for more than 300 years, it stands in the old quarter just below the Fortaleza de la Mota, barely 200 metres away. Over time it has been a stable, a wine cellar and the home of families deeply rooted in Alcalá la Real.

Today it welcomes travellers: a place to rest and a setting for private events. A different kind of stay, offering guests private rooms and a homemade breakfast in an intimate, family atmosphere. Designed as a true bed & breakfast, it offers peace and a personal touch.

At La Casa del Patio Grande, visitors find a blend of different decorative styles, creating a unique space that reflects the personality and tastes of María and Paco, your hosts. Most of the furniture, some of it from the early 20th century, carries the spirit that has always lived within these walls. Stones carefully rescued from beneath layers of lime and plaster. An exclusive B&B.

The house lies in the San Juan quarter, a historic neighbourhood at the foot of the Fortaleza de la Mota, in the heart of Alcalá la Real's old town. It is known for its important religious monuments and traditions of popular devotion. Chief among them is the Church of San Juan, built from a late-16th-century hermitage and one of the town's first churches; it is the seat of the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud. Its streets keep their traditional, historic layout, just five minutes from the centre of Alcalá la Real.

Behind this house, there is a story

Some people welcome you and make you feel at home. Two curious journalists who have found in this project a new way to enjoy life: sharing conversations, small pleasures and a love of taking care of the details. Because retiring does not always mean doing less. Sometimes it means starting to do things for the right reasons.

Paco and María advise every guest on what to do in Alcalá la Real and are always happy to help with any question that may come up. You can ask them anything in Spanish or English. Occasionally, and without prior notice, they may also offer guests lunch or dinner.

Meet the people behind this house: your hosts.

An exceptional setting

Alcalá la Real

For centuries it was a frontier. Here Al-Andalus and Castile stood face to face. From that tension rose a town of watchtowers, walls and steep streets that still keeps its watchful air. When it passed into Castilian hands in 1341, it was given for ever the name it still bears: la Real, "the Royal".

Today the Fortaleza de la Mota crowns the town, its silhouette rising above olive groves that stretch away into the Sierra Sur de Jaén. Walking up to it at sunset, when the stone turns the colour of old gold, is one of those things you remember without needing photographs.

And at its feet stands La Casa del Patio Grande. Stepping out of its door means stepping into a town with a memory: streets that invite you to get lost, squares where people still stop to chat, and a bar or a table waiting for someone to ask what's cooking today.

There is no need to hurry here. Alcalá la Real is best discovered slowly, and even better when it is shown to you by someone who loves it.

Your host

Paco Rodríguez

Journalist, endlessly curious, keen cook and host by vocation.

Much more than a place to sleep

Some people open the doors of their home. And some, on top of that, make you feel you had been expected for a long time. He is one of the latter. A journalist by profession, he has swapped the rush of working life for something that has always fascinated him: people and their stories.

He is the kind of host who observes without intruding, listens without looking at the clock and keeps you company without imposing. The kind who knows when to start a conversation, when to recommend that corner you won't find in the guidebooks, and when to let each guest enjoy their own silence.

He is hospitable, friendly and attentive to detail. Very much so. The kind who remembers a preference, takes care of a small gesture and finds satisfaction in making things a little better than expected. And if there is a kitchen nearby, it will very likely become his favourite territory. Because for him, cooking is not just about making something delicious: it is another way of sharing, of caring and of saying "make yourself at home".

La Casa del Patio Grande is his life project, built around hospitality, conversation, small pleasures and the joy of discovering what each day may bring.

Perhaps that is why things happen differently here. No artifice, no unnecessary formalities, and none of that distance that sometimes exists between those who welcome and those who arrive.

Because good accommodation gives you a comfortable bed and a place to rest. A good bed & breakfast can also give you an unexpected conversation, a breakfast made with love, a recommendation that becomes the best memory of your trip, or the feeling of having met someone interesting along the way.

This house is a place with personality, with stories, and with someone on the other side of the door who is still very eager to share them.

Co-owner

María

Born in Alcalá, a voice of radio and a host at heart.

Some people arrive somewhere and fill it with life. María is one of them. Born in Alcalá la Real, she knows her town the way you only know the place where you grew up: its streets, its people, its stories and that way of building community that can't be learned anywhere. So when she and Paco decided to shape this project, they started from something very simple: the wish to open the doors of their home to those who come from afar.

A radio professional, she knows how to listen and how to tell a story. She is friendly, outgoing and easy to talk to, one of those people who, after five minutes, make you feel you have known each other for ever.

Attentive and generous, she notices the little things: what each guest likes, the gesture that brightens a day, that detail nobody asked for but everyone appreciates. Anyone who stays in this house notices it: you don't arrive at a guesthouse here, you arrive in a town where everyone has a name.

Because some people simply welcome you, and others introduce you to their town the way you introduce friends. María is one of the latter.
